Unsafe products, including dangerous goods, have reportedly been found among a mass of items available through popular shopping websites and marketplaces, accordingly to a report by ‘Which’.
The investigation found two-thirds of the products – including carbon monoxide alarms, baby toys and travel adaptors – bought from third-party sellers on the most popular sites failed EU safety requirements.
In total, 250 targeted products were tested over twelve months and 165 of them failed official checks. Many were found to be either mis-declared dangerous goods or a safety risk to consumers due to containing harmful substances, poor design or wrong information.
Online marketplaces aren’t responsible for the safety of the products sold through their sites, this responsibility falls to the numerous global sellers. While acknowledging the thousands of fantastic products that are sold successfully on these sites, Which are calling for a change in regulations.
